Features Guide
A walkthrough of every major feature in Ravenburst.
The Editor
Ravenburst uses a full rich-text editor with a two-row format bar above it. The format bar controls character formatting (bold, italic, font, size, colour, highlight) in the top row, and paragraph formatting (alignment, lists, indent, line spacing, tables) in the bottom row.
Notable editor behaviours:
- No autocorrect. Ever. What you type is what stays.
- No autocomplete. Nothing guesses your next word.
- Zoom — scale the editor text independently of your OS zoom. The percentage shows in the status bar.
Navigator & Project Structure
The Navigator on the left shows your full project tree. Every project contains:
- Manuscript — Parts, Chapters, Scenes in any nesting
- Front Matter — title page, dedication, epigraph, etc.
- Characters — character cards with full profile fields
- Places — location cards
- Reference — notes and images for research
- Notes — freeform notes not tied to the manuscript
- Templates — reusable document templates
- Trash — soft-deleted documents, restorable at any time
Drag to reorder. Double-click to rename. Right-click for context menu options.
Snapshots
Press Ctrl+Shift+S at any time to save a named snapshot of the current document. Snapshots are stored permanently — nothing is ever auto-deleted.
Browse, preview, and restore snapshots from the Snapshots panel (accessible from the document's right-click menu or the Inspector panel).
Find & Replace
- Ctrl+F — find within the current document (Ctrl+H for find and replace).
- Ctrl+Shift+F — project-wide search across all documents.
- Replace single or all instances. Click a result to jump to the document and highlight the match.
Spellcheck & Dictionary
Spellcheck runs as you type. Misspelled words are underlined in red. Right-click for suggestions, to ignore, or to add to your custom dictionary.
Your custom dictionary is stored locally — character names and technical terms you add are remembered between sessions. Manage your dictionary via Edit → Manage Custom Dictionary.
Word Count
Word counts appear in the status bar at all times — per document and per project. Select text to see a selection count. Open View → Word Count → Project Word Count Details for a full breakdown by chapter.
Writing Targets & Statistics
Set a manuscript word count goal and a daily session target via Project → Project Targets (Ctrl+Alt+T). Progress bars fill as you write; the session counter resets automatically at midnight.
Project → Statistics shows a full breakdown: words, characters, paragraphs, sentences, average lengths, estimated pages, reading time, and word frequency. Switch between compiled-only and all-documents counts.
Project → Writing History logs your daily word count with a bar chart and streak counter. History accumulates automatically — nothing to configure.
Text Cleanup
Under Edit → Text Cleanup are three cleanup operations for the current document:
- Replace Multiple Spaces with Single Space — collapses any run of spaces into one
- Remove Empty Lines Between Paragraphs — deletes blank paragraph nodes
- Delete Struck-Through Text — permanently removes any text you've marked with strikethrough
Line Numbers
Toggle paragraph numbers in the editor margin via View → Show/Hide → Line Numbers. Each paragraph gets a counter in the left margin — useful for script work, proofreading, or workshops where participants need to reference line numbers.
Favorite Projects
Add the current project to your favorites with File → Add to Favorites. Favorites appear in the File → Favorite Projects submenu for quick access across sessions.
Import
Go to File → Import to import:
- .docx — Microsoft Word (formatting preserved)
- .txt — Plain text
- .md — Markdown
- .fountain — Fountain screenplay format
